Where did “eight glasses a day” come from?
The origin of the famous “eight glasses” or “eight by eight” rule — eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day — is surprisingly murky. It appears to trace back to a 1945 recommendation from the US Food and Nutrition Board, which suggested adults consume roughly 2.5 litres of water daily. The crucial second half of that recommendation — that most of this water comes from food — was quietly forgotten along the way.
In 2002, Dr Heinz Valtin published a paper in the American Journal of Physiology that searched for scientific evidence behind the rule. His conclusion: there is none. No controlled study had ever established that healthy adults in temperate climates need to consciously drink eight glasses of plain water daily on top of their normal diet.
That does not mean hydration does not matter — it absolutely does. It just means the specific number is arbitrary, and your real target depends entirely on who you are and how you live.
Why water is so important
Water makes up roughly 60% of the adult human body. It is involved in virtually every biological process that keeps you functioning, including:
- Regulating body temperature through sweating and respiration
- Transporting nutrients and oxygen to cells via the bloodstream
- Flushing waste products through the kidneys as urine
- Lubricating joints and cushioning organs
- Supporting digestion and nutrient absorption
- Maintaining blood pressure and volume
- Enabling electrical signals in the brain and nervous system
Even mild dehydration — as little as 1–2% of body weight lost as fluid — has measurable effects on cognitive performance, mood, and physical endurance. A 2% fluid deficit in a 70 kg person is just 1.4 litres. You can reach that point through a warm afternoon and skipped drinks without feeling thirsty at all.
How much do you actually need?
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) sets the following adequate intake targets for total water from all sources:

These are starting-point averages for people living in temperate climates without significant physical activity. Your real requirement could be substantially higher depending on the factors below.

The figures above assume you are sitting in a comfortable room doing very little. In reality, many everyday factors can push your daily requirement considerably higher. Here are the most important ones:
Where your water actually comes from
One of the most persistent misconceptions about hydration is that your daily fluid target must come from glasses of plain water. In reality, your body draws water from three main sources:
Does coffee count?
Yes — and this is one of the most persistent hydration myths. While caffeine does have a mild diuretic effect, research consistently shows that moderate coffee and tea consumption (up to 3–4 cups a day) contributes to net fluid intake rather than depleting it. The diuretic effect is smaller than the volume of water in the drink itself. Regular caffeine consumers also develop tolerance to the diuretic effect quickly.
High-water foods
Certain foods are so water-rich that they contribute substantially to your daily total. Cucumbers, tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon, celery, and leafy greens are all over 90% water by weight. A large salad can contribute several hundred millilitres to your daily fluid intake without drinking a drop.
Signs you’re not drinking enough
Your body has several ways of signalling that it needs more water. Thirst is an obvious one, but it is a lagging indicator — by the time you feel thirsty, you may already be mildly dehydrated. Older adults in particular often have a reduced thirst response, meaning they can become dehydrated without noticing.
Other signs to watch for include:
- Dark yellow or amber urine — the single most reliable daily indicator (see below)
- Infrequent urination — going fewer than four times in a day suggests low fluid intake
- Headaches — even mild dehydration is a common headache trigger
- Fatigue and low energy — fluid deficit reduces blood volume, making the heart work harder
- Difficulty concentrating — cognitive tasks become measurably harder at 1–2% dehydration
- Dry lips or mouth — a later sign, but easy to notice
- Dizziness when standing — low fluid volume can cause a brief drop in blood pressure on rising
- Constipation — the colon draws water from stool when intake is low
The urine colour test
The simplest, most reliable way to monitor your hydration day-to-day is to check the colour of your urine. It takes no equipment, no tracking, and gives you an instant read on whether you need to drink more.
Note that some vitamins (especially B2/riboflavin), foods like beetroot, and certain medications can alter urine colour independently of hydration. If your urine is consistently dark despite drinking plenty, mention it to your GP.
Common hydration myths debunked
The world of hydration advice is full of confidently stated claims that do not hold up to scrutiny. Here are the most widespread myths and what the evidence actually says:
There is no scientific evidence for this specific figure. Your needs depend on your size, activity level, diet and climate — and much of your fluid comes from food.
Moderate caffeine intake does not cause net fluid loss. Tea and coffee both count toward your daily fluid total. The diuretic effect of caffeine is smaller than the volume of fluid consumed.
For most healthy adults, the thirst mechanism is a reliable and timely signal — not a sign you’ve already fallen behind. Drinking when thirsty is generally sufficient for sedentary adults in cool climates.
There is no strong clinical evidence linking increased water intake to improved skin appearance in people who are already adequately hydrated. Dehydration does affect skin, but drinking beyond what you need adds no cosmetic benefit.
Hyponatraemia — dangerously low sodium caused by excessive water diluting the blood — is a real medical risk, particularly for endurance athletes. It is rare in everyday life, but drinking many litres of water in a short time is not beneficial and can be harmful.
